10 Questions with Tim Hur

Tim Hur, Better Homes and Gardens Director of Diversity and Philanthropy, helps the BHGRE network communicate more effectively with each other and clients. Discover which P.A.I.G.E. value he identifies with most, his favorite qualities in a customer and the song he can’t stop humming.

1.     Which of our BHGRE® P.A.I.G.E. (Passion, Authenticity, Inclusion, Growth, Excellence) core values do you identify with most, and why?

Inclusion. Not only is it part of my job title, but I truly believe that diversity and inclusion is the future of real estate and life in general. As I was growing up, I always felt that I was different, never being able to identify with one group. Back then, it was something that I always struggled with and had identity issues since I could never find out who I really identified with. Now, I feel that being different is a strength. Being diverse and inclusive is also just the right thing to do.

2.     What are your favorite qualities in a customer?

Nobody is the same. Everyone has their own communication style; everyone has their own expectations. Clients that are able to articulate what the expectations are and explicitly state what their communication style were my favorite.

3.     What is the one characteristic that’s helped you the most in your career?

Being honest with yourself and being honest with your client, even if the news is good or bad.

4.     What was the last book you read?

The book I am re-reading for fun is “Rise of the Creative Class,” although my favorite book of all time is “The Little Prince.” Le Petit Prince – I mean, “Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it’s tiresome for children to always and forever explaining things to them.”

5.     If you were not in real estate, what would you be doing?

I can’t imagine a life not doing real estate. It’s been in my blood.

6.     What was the last song you heard that you couldn’t stop humming?

Despacito, although I can’t speak Spanish.

7.     Who is your real-life hero?

I have several, but my living real-life hero is Ron Phipps, Past-President of NAR. He’s one of the reasons why I’m involved as a Realtor and passionate about what I do.

8.     What is your favorite motto?

“Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” – Albert Camus

9.     If you could sell a home in any market in the world, where would it be?

I’d sell a home where I know the market in and out. I’d be too nervous to represent someone and try to sell real estate where I don’t know anything! That being said, I’d love to know and sell in an area where there’s a beach!

10.  What advice would you give your younger self starting out in real estate?

I started off in real estate right before the crash in the late 2000’s– so be patient, seek out mentors, and learn from the best. Life won’t be given to you on a silver platter but a little bit of luck and a little bit of patience – you’ll do just fine.
