The REport
How many “friends” do you have on Facebook? If you are connected with people who are not true acquaintances, Jimmy Kimmel is calling on you to partake in “National UnFriend Day.” Geeksugar lays out some un-friendable offenses. What would cause you to un-friend someone?
Are you a drunken tweeter? Enter the Social Media Sobriety Test…Yes, you heard me right. In a sign of the times, Webroot released a new plugin that allows users to set hours to block access to sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. If you try to go to one of the social media sites during the time period, you will be subjected to a difficult test (i.e. typing the alphabet backwards).
Google is spreading some holiday cheer to AirTran, Delta and Virgin America passengers in the form of free Gogo Wi-Fi on domestic flights during the busy travel season. I suspect the visibility will result in more all-around love for the search engine – and sales for retailers. It’s a great strategy.
In other seasonal news, Black Friday has come early this year – really early. Holiday sales are already in full force at retailers nationwide. Have you started your shopping yet?
If not, you should join Facebook Places. Mark Zuckerberg announced last week a new “Deals” feature which allows people to find deals nearby when checking into a location on Facebook. Gap last week gave away 10,000 free pairs of jeans! I challenge you to buy at least one of your holiday gifts through the feature – it could save you a bundle!
In an effort to offer a competitive advantage in the usually homogeneous hotel industry, Marriott International’s Renaissance Hotels is launching an arts program, RLife Live, which encompasses music, culinary arts and design through hotel-branded entertainment during on-property experiences. Interesting way to attract guests and locals alike!
Long gone are the days of sending a hand-written letter to Pennsylvania Avenue hoping for an answer to burning questions on the state of the union. This week, Monster.com members will be able to ask the Obama Administration questions on the country’s employment outlook on Monster’s Facebook page. Interesting!
Did you watch the ING New York City Marathon this weekend? It was, as always, an inspiring event, especially as rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena crossed the finish line. Way to go, runners!
