Social networking becomes less complicated when you break it into simple steps. Last week, I presented this concept at NAR to a predominately broker owner audience. As promised, I am sharing an edited version of the presentation right here.

The four categories, as we see them are:

Social Media Profiles… or more simply put, personal profiles on the various sites such as Facebook, Linkedin, MySpace. Building your profile is the first step.

Text Platforms… blogging, microbloging.  The second step is creating a platform to speak from and collaborate. WordPress and TypePad provide blogging platforms. Twitter is great for microblogging.

Visual and Imagery Platforms… add videos and photos to make your message more engaging. You Tube and Flickr bring your networking and your story to life.

Use Listening and Sharing Tools. Listen to what’s going on and spread the word. RSS, Digg are two of many tools that accomplish this.

(This is one of my longest posts ever! Good for a weekend read…)

When you are building a brand from the ground up, you can’t do it without receiving feedback. What better place to get feedback than at the annual NAR conference where you have a captive audience of some 20,000+ REALTORS® to talk to?

I have been attending this conference for at least the past 15 years.  I still remember my very first one. I just couldn’t get enough of it… the amount of information was staggering to me, the number of participants amazed me. I planned each and every session I would attend in advance, circled all of the trade show booths that were of interest, and visited them all. In later years, I began to speak at sessions rather than attend them and, for a few years, did not even make it through the tradeshow doors. Priorities change, and people get busy being busy.

The entire election process has fascinated me. When you think about it, a long time has passed since it all started. I remember being at an early fundraiser in The Hamptons almost a year and a half ago.  There are a lot of firsts in this election. Of course there are the obvious ones: the potential first African American president, the potential first female vice president, and the potentially oldest president to take office.

There are some humorous firsts – this is the first election where the Saturday Night Live actors looked so incredibly like several of the candidates. This is the first election where a vice presidential candidate was punked by a Canadian radio station.

Masiello Group Joins Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Network

Posted by Sherry Chris

The whole team was buzzing yesterday about The Masiello Group announcement… chatting it up on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn while the office was jammed with pallets of marketing materials that were being prepped for a trip to New England.

In fact, the whole building was buzzing about it, and rightfully so. In a time of industry and market paralysis, here is another good news story of a real estate brokerage taking action to position itself for the future…  making plans and executing on them with the confidence that is the mark of the true entrepreneur.

There is so much good will coming from this announcement, especially from the Wilkins & Associates team in PA as they now look forward to the networking and information exchanges that will result with the addition of each new family member.

On behalf of the network, welcome to Chris Masiello and his whole team. It’s great to have you with us.

As the “Shoes Keep Dropping,” it is easy to become paralyzed by the media reports, the unknown challenges that lay ahead, the worries around how long these market and economic conditions will last. In fact, it is difficult right now to think of anything else.  For the most part, it is the same story everywhere — people are hunkering down for what everyone believes will be a challenging fall and winter.

As I sat in the audience on Sunday (front row, as usual) at the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals convention in Phoenix, an impressive lineup of presenters performed, and I say performed because it was interesting and entertaining. Even the economists were funny and witty in their comments. That was my first clue there was a different attitude happening at this particular conference. Nobody was commenting that the “numbers were down” as far as attendees. People actually seemed upbeat. This is odd, I thought.

never eat aloneAt the upcoming NAR conference in November, I will be speaking about the power of networking and how it can have a profound impact on your business. One of the masters of networking is author and professional speaker Keith Ferrazzi who wrote the bestseller Never Eat Alone. Not only has Keith turned his natural networking ability into a very successful business, but he has managed to stay ahead of the curve by using social networking. If you check him out on Facebook he has thousands of friends and he just launched his own social networking site. Go take a look. We are fortunate to have Keith as a member of our advisory board. His wisdom and insight is invaluable.
