How Green Are You?

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the greenest, how green would you rate yourself and your family?

This year, we’ll be asking that very same question to thousands of consumers across the country in research we are conducting in concert with the Better Homes and Gardens® 15-city Living Green Tour. Above, you can check out a video of Sherry Chris interviewing Gayle Butler, Editor in Chief of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, about the magazine’s green initiatives. Camilla played camera crew while she and Sherry the toured BH&G’s 2,500 square foot “booth” at the Macy’s Flower Show in San Francisco.

So far, we have completed surveys at home shows that have run in Hartford, Conn., Greenville, S.C., and San Francisco. We are learning some pretty interesting stuff from the folks attending the home shows.

As the year continues we’ll continue to assemble a profile as to what Americans from across the country are thinking when it comes to being green.

What have we seen so far? Many respondents grade themselves right around average, or a “5” on the 1 to 10 scale, and cite “price” as their single greatest challenge in becoming more green, with “convenience” a close second.

Not surprisingly, most respondents feel pretty well informed. Considering the attention this topic has been getting recently, it’s not surprising to see the “feeling informed” figures come back in the high 80 and 90 percentiles.

What is also interesting is that people are ready to speak with their wallets on this one. In the three markets we have data on already, well over 80 percent of those surveyed stated they would invest to green up their homes for resale if they felt it would help sell the property.

Where to next? The Better Homes and Gardens Living Green Tour just finished its appearance in San Diego and will continue traveling the country to include stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami, Nashville, Boston, Washington, D.C., Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago and a grand finale in New York in October. It’s a great tour. Check it out if you can.
